Edith Abbott Featured on BBC Radio
Edith Abbott wrote her groundbreaking report on Statistics Relating to Crime in Chicago more than a century ago, but it is still making news in 2019. Abbott was the subject of the October 28 broadcast of More or Less, the BBC radio program that “explains the numbers and statistics in the news and in life.” You can listen to the episode here.
In an earlier series of posts, I outlined Abbott’s background and contributions to statistics, and explored why she is not better known as a statistician today. You can also read more about her in the last chapter of my book Measuring Crime: Behind the Statistics. Abbott’s 1915 report previewed many of the issues facing persons who collect and analyze crime statistics today.
